April Favorites

Well April is coming to a close and tomorrow is May.  I'd like to take some time to talk about some of my favorite things this month.  First of all the weather.  I am so glad that it finally feels like Texas again.  Winter seemed to be teasing us for a little bit sort of going "Okay I am over" and then popping out again with "Just kidding!"  But the jackets have moved to the back of the closet and I am ready to make good use of my fan collection.  Which is a fun accessory to have by the way.

And now on to a few of my favorite things from April.

Tea Time Tuesday: Old School Things

Tea Time Tuesday. Stop and enjoy the little things.

+Jenn and I had a fun trip last Tuesday.  It was a leisurely paced day.  I found some dandelions and we made wishes.  One of the fuzzy little seeds seemed to have attached to one of us and we found it dancing around the car.

Always take time to enjoy the little things in life even if they are very small simple things.  Don't scoff at the joy a person can get from the little things either.

To the End of Alazan Drive

Street Sign: Alazan Dr.

Now that the weather is warmer I am able to comfortably enjoy one of my beloved past times.  I love riding my bicycle.  One of the great things about riding a bike is that you are not using up any gas or other resources.  This means that you can just ride around and explore.  If you find a road you have never been down, you can guiltlessly go explore it.

Bird on a power line
Heard this guy singing when I stopped to take pictures.

I actually love days like this where I am not riding anywhere in particular or I am in no hurry.  Another hobby I am interested in is miniature doll houses.  It is always inspiring to look at all the houses in the residential areas.  I will see an interesting design in the architecture or a lovely garden of plants and wonder if it could be replicated in 1:12 scale.

Nitrogen Tank
Oh look, a nitrogen tank.

When riding a bike there is more than one pace.  You can speed along for the thrill or just coast on and enjoy all the sounds and sights.  It is also fun to take a camera on these little trips to capture images of anything that entertains you.  I took a few pictures on today's trip.  Do you have a past time that you love?

That is what is at the end of Alazan Drive.

Things I Love Thursday: Finding New Things

This week has been busy, but I have also gotten some well needed rest.  HabitRPG has been super useful.  Thanks a mill to Mia of Superheroesque for posting about it.  The weather seems to have warmed up quickly.  I am going to need to get some sunblock.  A good investment for anyone who spends lots of time on a bike.  Time for the fun list of things I loved.  I hope you find something you like.

4 Tips For Being More Productive And Working Toward Your Goals

Life can feel hectic. It can feel like we aren't making any progress.  Then we turn around and see that we have been doing a lot of procrastinating and generally being distracted.  With all these distractions and a seeming lack of discipline on our part how do we keep our compass pointing true?

We can all lose direction from time to time.  So, rather than wasting the time and effort on chastising and being ashamed of ourselves, lets pick ourselves up, dust ourselves off, and get to work.

Tea Time Tuesday: Lotus Dreams

For years now my friend +Jenn, from Just Plum Petite, and I have had a little tradition we call Tea Time Tuesday.  It started very simply between our college classes in the student union building on Tuesdays.  We would have something to drink (usually tea and occasionally cocoa), a small snack, and just spend time chatting.  Almost every week one or both of us would bring something new to try.  These were great times and we each discovered new drinks and treats.  These days our Tea Time Tuesdays have developed into full outings.  We both love tea and are always searching for new places to try.

Writing, Routine, and Adventures

Oleander Bush

Getting a routine down can really help you build a habit of writing everyday and help you push yourself to write faster and longer.  But doing things out of routine means that you will have new experiences to write about.  This week I tried several new things and did several things out of my regular routine.  While I didn't get as much writing done as I would have wished to, I do feel better than i did in the lull that winter brought with it.  This week I just didn't have enough time dedicated to writing to get all the writing I wanted done.  I am going to try to get myself back into a routine, while still maintaining room for adventures and the unexpected.

Do you have a writing routine built in to your days?  How often do you abandon you day to day routine to try something new or go somewhere different?

Writing Response

Last weeks writing exercise was to write a haiku about something that is on your desk.  I chose a little rubrics cube key chain.

Writing Exercise

This week lets practice just writing.  So settle in at your favorite writing place with your favorite writing tools.  Write for ten minutes without stopping.  Write anything you like.  Even if it is all just useless stuff keep writing.  I find that sometimes you have to write through a whole lot of sludge to get to the gold.

    Tata and happy writing.

Things I Love Thursday: To Much Fun To List

Two bold, beautiful pink roses
These roses smelt great

This week was pretty good.  I am feeling the energy from spring and I feel more productive.  It is a bit odd the weather is.  The mornings are a bit frigid for south Texas and then the afternoons will be rather hot.  It is kind of like winter is trying to hold on to us just a little longer, but summer is already taking hold.  I do hope our spring stays for at least a bit before we see the melting 100 degree temperatures of summer arrive.  I am looking forward to some picnic weather.

There were lot's of fun things this week.  Here are a hand full of the things I loved.

Adventures in Feed the Beast: Exploring

Minecraft boat and gold shovel
My gold shovel of exploration.

Well my strategy to focus on only one or two mods in Feed the Beast seems to have worked for me.  I am toying around with Thaumcraft 3 and IndustrialCraft 2.  I managed to find several other islands and a larger land mass not to far from my lovely island home.  I have brought back rubber and rubber tree saplings, which I planted all over a nearby island to farm.  I also brought back feathers and leather.  I even found acacia trees.  They are rather nice to look at.

Embarking on My Camp NaNoWriMo Adventure

Camp NaNoWriMo

I found it intimidating to start the NaNo project this month.  It was not the fear of a blank page as I have a good idea of what I am writing.  And it wasn't necessarily laziness or not wanting to write.  It seems that it was more a fear of the amount of work that had to be done.  I felt overwhelmed and was stalling.  Not the best choice to solve such a situation as it will only add to the work load.  Yet I think we all do this at least once in our lives.  Put things off to do other menial tasks.  But the only way to fix the problem and make it better is to get started.  And so that is what I did.  It is still very slow going, but it is picking up speed.  Have you had this feeling recently?

Writing Exercise

Write a haiku about something that is on your desk right now.  Don't have a desk?  Find an object in your immediate vicinity.  Write a haiku about it.

Astronomy in April

I love astronomy.  It is the one science that I have loved as long as I can remember.  April has some excellent astronomy happenings and holidays.  So let's take a look at what is happening this month.

April 12 Yuri's Night

Cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin was the first person in space.  That happened in 1961.  That was 53 years ago.  Yuri's Night is a celebration of humanity in space.  Check out the official sites about page for more info and history.  There are parties all over the world so see if there is one near you.

April 15  Total Lunar Eclipse

Check out the map and data sheet to see if this event will be visible in your area.

April 22 & 23 Lyrids Meteor Shower

It seems the moon will not be in our favor for this viewing, but give it a shot anyway.  Last year I managed to catch a great view of one of the Perseid meteors.  The tail lasted for a few seconds and the meteor traveled across 100 degrees of the sky.  It was so much fun to see.  I will try to see a few more meteors this month.

April 26 - April 27  The CosmoQuest 2014 Hangoutathon

In order to raise 'money to build a more scientific future' they are running 36 hours of live streaming astronomy.  Check it out.

April 28 International Astronomy Day

What better day to go out and look up at the sky or read up on the stars and planets?

April 29 Annular Solar Eclipse

This event is only visible if you live on the coast of South Africa, the eastern coast of Australia, or if you live on Antarctica.  Here is the data sheet on this event.  So if you live in Australia and want to see an eclipse, save the date.

For more information on astronomy that is happening in April check out this post from Cosmo Quest.  Ready For Global Astronomy Month?

Also The Sky has a great Astronomy Calendar of Celestial Events.  This is my quick go to for what is happening in the sky.

Have fun looking up into the sky.  There is so much to see up there.  And there is so much to learn.  Until next time stay nerdy.

Things I Love Thursday: Ice Skating Magical Girl

Another week that felt long.  This one was less stressful though.  When I have weeks like this where I get so stressed with things, I am very glad for my gratitude list.  I keep it all week long and add to it as good things come along.  This means that if I ever feel absolutely terrible, or just not fabulous, I can pull up my list and take a look at some of the happy things of that week.  And I can always pull up past lists.  Even if you don't put it up for others to see a gratitude list is a powerful tool for changing your outlook.  On to my happy bits from the week.

How did your week go?  Do you keep a list of happy things?

April Try-Its

Like I have mentioned before, I felt so much like I was in a lull all winter long.  This month I would like to actively become more creative and live more intentionally. As such I want to improve my general health and get my home clean and organized.  Here are some of the things I will be attempting this month.

  • Write at least 750 words each day for Camp NaNoWriMo
  • Sleep at least 7 hours every night
  • Do some serious spring cleaning
  • Spend time reading books everyday
  • Start tracking my study time for my own records

Those are my try-its for the month.  What are you going to try this month?
